Harness

A is the that wraps an and gives it tools, instructions, and a loop. and are harnesses. Everything about the harness is gathered here.

A small robot stacks purple blocks inside a scaffold of guide rails while a distant hand holds a compass.

What it is

Harness engineering is the name gave to a new kind of engineering work in an article about building a product with . Over five months a small team shipped an internal beta with zero lines of hand-written : about a million lines and roughly 1,500 merged , starting with just three engineers. Their rule was "Humans steer. execute." The engineers' job moved from writing code to designing the environment, stating the intent and building so Codex agents can do reliable work. When the agent got stuck, they did not ask it to try harder; they asked what capability was missing and how to make it legible and enforceable for the agent.

In plain words Instead of cooking yourself, you design the kitchen, the recipes and the checks.

How it works

  1. Give agents a short map
  2. Keep all knowledge in the
  3. Enforce rules with and tests
  4. Clean up drift continuously

How to use it

  1. AGENTS.md

kept short, about 100 lines, as a table of contents that points into a structured docs/ folder instead of a 1,000-page manual.

  2. Custom linters and structural tests — enforce architecture rules such as fixed layers and dependency directions, and the lint tell the agent how to fix the problem.

  3. Legible app — every can boot its own copy of the app, and Codex reads the through the plus logs and metrics, so it can and check fixes.

  4. Golden principles and cleanup tasks — background Codex tasks scan for drift and open small refactoring pull requests, like garbage collection that pays down technical debt a little at a time.

Watch out

OpenAI says this behavior depends heavily on the structure and tooling of that one repository and should not be assumed to work elsewhere without similar investment. They also say they do not yet know how architectural coherence holds up over years in a fully agent-generated system. Their fast merging with few blocking gates would be irresponsible in a low-throughput team, as the article itself notes.

Examples

  • AGENTS.md a short map that points to the docs
  • docs/ designs, plans and quality notes kept in the repository
